The authors investigate the possibility of doing high quality 1 μm - 5 μm photometry and spectrophotometry at the new observatory on La Palma in the Canary Islands, El Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos. Solar scans taken on the Canaries of the near-infrared windows, show that large parts can be exceptionally clear of telluric lines at observatory altitudes. The observed scans are compared to those predicted by a theoretical atmospheric transmission model, and the limits on accurate infrared photometry are assessed.
