Two photopolarimeters designated VPM orbited planet Mars in February 1974 on board the spacecraft MARS-5. Measurements relevant to the atmospheric turbidity, the white clouds and the dust veils are analysed. During the observations, the martian atmosphere was unusually dust-free and transparent; the measured opacity was τ0 = 0.04±0.03. White clouds were analysed, the measurements are compatible with small ice crystals. Several dust clouds have been observed, their polarization curves were derived at five wavelengths and are analysed by comparison with available measurements on nonspherical particles.
