The purpose of binary population synthesis is to determine, as far as possible, the consistency of our theoretical understanding of single and binary stars with the statistics of stars in our galaxy (and ultimately other galaxies). It is important to fit all types of stellar systems simultaneously rather than just concentrating on particular types of stars. In this paper, we describe the difficulties and problems of binary population synthesis, and the efforts we have made to establish a self-consistent binary population synthesis model.
