Description of certain spacecraft of the Mars series which photographed the Martian surface and explored it with the aid of special descent capsules. The ballistic features of the flight of the Mars 4, 5, 6, and 7 interplanetary stations are contrasted with the flight scheme of the Mars 2 and 3 vehicles. The design of the Mars 4 and 5 stations is then contrasted with that of the Mars 6 and 7 stations, noting the presence of a descent capsule in the latter two stations and the method employed for separation of the capsule. Various onboard systems common to all the vehicles of this series are described, including the heat-regulation system, the radio and phototelemetric equipment, the orientation control system, the autonomous control system, the power supply system, the system of overall automatic control, and the propulsion plants. Finally, the special features of the descent and landing of the capsules are discussed, a description is given of the ground command and measurement complex, and the scientific instrumentation of the stations is summarized.
