Statistical analysis of the distance to the dayside magnetopause, aimed at detecting the possible dependence of the dayside magnetic flux on the polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field. It is found that the normalized size of the dayside magnetosphere at the time of southward interplanetary magnetic field direction is smaller than at the time of northward interplanetary field direction. The difference in the magnetopause position between the two interplanetary field polarity conditions ranges from 0 to 2 earth radii. The implications of this finding and of other ones are discussed.
