A scheme due to Forward for canceling out gravity tides in a space laboratory is improved upon. It is shown how fourth-order terms in the potential can be eliminated by using eight masses instead of six. Even more economical compensation is obtained by using an ellipsoidal shell. The region of nullification then extends throughout the interior. If gravity is to be nullified inside matter, the density of the latter uniquely determines the angular velocity required. The self-gradients are uniform if the sample is ellipsoidal. External masses can be dispensed with for a particular orbital height if the sample is encased in another ellipsoid of higher density.
