A spectroscopic method is proposed for estimating a lower limit on the thickness of the layer with anomalous chemical composition in the atmosphere of an Ap star. Lines situated shortward and longward of the Balmer jump, which are formed at different levels in the atmosphere, are used. An application to the Ap star HD 168733 indicates that the anomalies extend to depths corresponding to optical depths of at least about 0.01-0.02 for a standard wavelength of 4000 A.
