The short lifetime and narrow-band nature of solar spike bursts are explained, the role of Landau damping by fast beam particles is clarified, and spike time profiles are analyzed. Evidence is presented which indicates that spikes are generated by electron fluxes which are instantaneously produced near the emission region and have small dimensions as well as moderate velocity dispersions. The preferential reverse drift of spikes in group structure is explained in terms of group delay of radio emission from an extended source. It is shown that the overall duration of a spike burst is determined by the total time required to establish a plateau in the particle velocity distribution function and that the temperature of the coronal plasma will be underestimated if allowance is made only for collisional plasma-wave damping because Landau damping by fast particles plays a significant role in plasma-wave absorption. A model for computing spike time profiles is proposed which yields satisfactory agreement with observed profiles.
