The article presents a broad discussion of cosmic masers with reference to the discovery of the first hydroxyl maser in 1963 and the subsequent verification of its existence by calculations of the temperature of masing regions. Attention is given to the quantum mechanics of masers and to the association of some masers with red variables. Observed variations in the visible, infrared, and hydroxyl-maser emissions are noted along with Doppler shifts in frequency. Potential pumping mechanisms are described, including collisions and radiation. It is felt that the source of the stellar-maser pump is infrared radiation. Means for calculating the velocities of maser stars by the Doppler velocity of the ordinary thermal microwave radiation from the atmosphere of red variable stars are given. A typical red-variable maser star is described as are masers found in molecular clouds associated with newly formed or forming stars, i.e., interstellar masers.
