Analysis of photometric and spectral observational data suggests that the brightest X-ray source, Sco X-1, is a component of a close binary system with a period of 3.9 days. The system is more than 2 kpc distant. The optical component is a subgiant of late spectral class whose size approaches the Roche limit. Inclination angle of the system is about 10 to 15 degrees. The optical variability is due to heating of the hemisphere of the normal star facing the X-ray source by X rays, as is the case with the system HZ Her/Her X-1. The distribution of energy in the continuous spectrum of the hot atmosphere corresponds to the class B0-O7 distorted by strong interstellar dust absorption.
