The existence of systematic differences is shown between recent precise lists of VLBI positions. They depend simultaneously on both spherical coordinates and reach amplitudes of a few milliarcseconds. The influence on fundamental astrometric quantities can most easily be estimated if the differences are represented by a small rotation. Significant rotational components also reach a few milliarcsec. A list of precise positions of the optical counterparts of compact radio sources was given by de Vegt and Gehlich (1982), and the differences from the radio positions are again discussed here. A net rotation of the optical pole with respect to the radio pole by 0.13 arcsec in the direction alpha = 2 h is found. After subtraction of this rotation, the remaining differences are split into components parallel and perpendicular to the major axes of the radio sources. The dispersion of the first is insignificantly larger than that of the latter. This gives 0.5 kpc as an upper limit for a possible real deviation between the optical and radio centers of radiation.
