Review of the changes which occurred over the last 10 to 15 years in the approach to the interpretation of stellar spectra, and discussion of the structure and physical assumptions of the underlying theory. The status of current research is examined, with special attention to the effects of departures from the assumption of LTE in stellar spectra, and to extended and expanding atmospheres. Promising areas of future research are pointed out.
