A correlation analysis is made of the morphologies of nine solar flares in a large active region and the fine structure of a sunspot group in the same region. A correlation is found between the outburst of the first large flare at 0355 UT on August 2 and the spatial and temporal variations in the morphological parameters of photospheric sunspots. All the initial bright points of the nine flares are closely correlated with the spiral structure of 'O' and 'B' sunspots. The directions of bright flare ribbons and filaments in the chromosphere, long serpentine penumbral fibers to the east of the 'O' sunspot, and the zero-force line of the horizontal magnetic field are found to be consistent with each other. This consistency is taken as morphological evidence in support of the theory that flares are propagated along the horizontal magnetic field on the surface of the sun.
