Two new dwarf irregular galaxies found on the UK Schmidt IIIaJ Southern Sky Survey have been observed in the 21-cm neutral hydrogen line using the Parkes 64-m telescope. Distance estimates using the brightest stars place UKS 1927-177 at 1.1 Mpc and UKS 2323-326 at 1.3 Mpc, indicating that both may be members of the Local Group on the conventional definition. Both galaxies have an unusually low surface brightness for their type. They are tentatively interpreted as very low-mass galaxies which have recently experienced a burst of star formation.
