Spectroscopic and morphological studies showed the strong emission line galaxy NGC 5506 to have a prominent nucleus and to be crossed by dust lanes. Its nuclear spectrum contains intense forbidden emission lines (including Fe II) and some lines of highly excited species, such as Fe VII. Relatively narrow line widths, however, prevent its classification as a Seyfert. The observations described in the present paper were made with the infrared photometer of Glass (1973) attached to a 1.88-m telescope. The aperture was centered on the bright nucleus of the galaxy. From the results, NGC 5506 appears to be a member of a small class of powerful infrared galaxies similar in most respects to the Seyferts, but lacking broad emission lines. They may form a link between 'ordinary' galaxies with giant nuclear H II regions and the Seyferts.
