A relation is derived between the temperature of the presolar nebula (PSN) and the upper limit to the mass of the planetesimals. It is assumed that an original mass on the order of 2-3 solar masses was available for the formation of cometary nuclei. The activity of the early sun is considered responsible for the loss of binding energy in the nuclei, and the subsequent lengthening of their orbits to the approximately 10,000 AU semimajor axes observed today.
