Scientific paper

Rotating variable stars are described, and their characteristics are reviewed. The small-amplitude variability of these stars is attributed to 'surface features' carried across the observer's line of sight by stellar rotation. Groups of rotating variables identified include Ap stars, some Am stars, RS CVn stars, and BY Dra stars; it is noted that the sun, certain cool supergiants, many intermediate-temperature giants, and some rapidly rotating A and B stars may also be low-amplitude rotating variables. The period-radius-(rotational) velocity relation of rotating variables is examined in general as well as for various positions on the H-R diagram. A table and a plot are presented which can be used to determine the period or rotational velocity of a rotating variable, which are inversely related to each other, if the other quantity is known.
