Seyfert galaxies and quasars are looked at first from the standpoint of the continuous spectrum and second in terms of the emission-line spectrum. Seyferts of type II are distinct from those of type I whereas quasars appear to be very luminous type I Seyferts. The nonthermal continuum components come from a region with an extent on the order of one parsec. The broad-line emission region is probably a few parsecs in extent while the sharper lines come from a much larger volume. Narrow emission lines may occur up to a few hundred parsecs from the center of a Seyfert and as far away as 10,000 parsecs from a quasar nucleus.
