We present a brief survey of recent direct numerical simulations and asymptotic or phenomenological models, aimed to understand the formation and time evolution of pressure-balanced coherent structures observed in the solar wind or in planetary magnetosheaths, and usually viewed as nonlinear mirror modes. Special attention is paid to the conditions for the generation of magnetic holes or humps, and to the dynamical role of kinetic and hydrodynamic effects.
