The S29 sounding rocket is described. A launch from Esrange is planned for March or April 1979. The payload has a total weight of 193 kg and will be launched to an apogee altitude of 405 km with a Nike-Black Brant VC rocket. Some technically interesting subsystems are described including: a split nose cone, radially and forward deployable booms, which are cheap and simple, yet permit repeated testing, a yoyo device to introduce deliberate coning automatically released at the desired roll angle using magnetometer signals, and a mechanism for forward separation on ground command, of a Barium shaped charge.
