A novel approach to exact solutions of Einstein's field equations for colliding gravitational pp waves is considered. The approach is a combination of the familiar approach which uses two null coordinates (Szekeres, 1972) and the approach which exploits the analogies between solutions of this type and stationary axisymmetric solutions (Chandrasekhar and Ferrari, 1984). It is demonstrated how two of the basic field equations can be transformed into the complex Ernst equations; solutions of this equation are then used to classify the known solutions describing colliding plane waves. A general method is presented for obtaining solutions for the case in which the approaching waves have constant collinear polarization; this method is illustrated by the derivation of two new exact solutions.
