Scientific paper

A coordinated European sounding-rocket effort, and its implementation in the next decade is proposed. A survey of present and planned activity in Europe is carried out. The future use of sounding rockets and its relation with the Shuttle and Spacelab is then analyzed. It is concluded that scientific, operational, and economic considerations are in favor of continued sounding-rocket activity in the 1980's and that output would largely benefit from coordination with the ESA Spacelab Utilization Program. The modalities of such a coordinated effort are outlined.
