The first launching of the Nike-Orion sounding rocket is described. The Nike-Orion sounding rocket developed by NASA, has an apogee capability of about 130 to 180 km. The first Nike-Orion launching at Esrange took place in April 1977 as part of a US-Swedish cooperative project. After the successful flight, the payload was recovered in undamaged condition. The Swedish Space Corporation has developed a split nose-cone and modular, versatile payload hardware for the Nike-Orion. The standard payload diameter is 14 inches (356 mm) and the typical payload weight ranges from about 70 kg to 150 kg.
