The operation of STARE (Scandinavian twin auroral radar experiment) radars is described and actual examples of STARE data from the British high latitude campaign and German substorm phenomena campaign are presented. It is shown that STARE data and rocket sounding measurements are complementary, interacting positively in the interpretation of auroral irregularities and related phenomena.
