Recent observations have been used to analyze various encounter models concerning their ability to explain the combined structural and dynamic behavior of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The apparent morphological complexity may be reasonably described in terms of large-scale displacements, which may in turn be explained as due to cataclysmic disruption caused by gravitational interaction with the galaxy and/or the Large Magellanic Cloud.
