During a balloon flight with the MPI Compton telescope from Uberaba/Brazil, the 1.809 MeV γ-ray line from radioactive 26Al was detected when the Galactic center came into the field of view. The image is consistent with a "point"-source origin at the Galactic center. The statistical significance of the line detection is 3.8 σ, and the point-source line flux is (6.4±2.6)×10-4cm-2s-1. The statistical accuracy of the measurement is, however, not sufficient to exclude a diffuse origin of the γ-ray line in interstellar space from unresolved candidate sources.
