Non thermal particles up to relativistic energies contain a large fraction of the energy released during solar activity, especially flares and coronal mass ejections. The Sun gives us a unique opportunity to observe radiative signatures of these particles at time scales relevant to their acceleration, to measure in space those particles which escape from the Sun, and to image the environment where the particles are accelerated. Shock waves of coronal mass ejections and magnetic reconnection during flares are the most plausible origins of energetic particle populations. The paper outlines recent work with emphasis on the French Solar-Terrerstrial Physics community.
