The effects of incomplete frequency redistribution on linear radiative transfer are examined analytically, summarizing the results of recent theoretical investigations. Topics addressed include redistribution functions, the influence and solution of transfer equations, radiation fields and model problems, global characteristics, and the comparative treatment of different scattering regimes. Also considered are partial redistribution in moving and nonplanar media and applications of the theory to (1) the L-alpha line in nebular spectra, (2) allowed O III emission due to the Bowen mechanism, and (3) the interpretation of solar and stellar line profiles.
