The spectrum of the L-alpha radiation in an expanding homogeneous infinite medium is calculated in the case of a very large optical thickness. Absorption of the photons in flight and on scattering is taken into account. Partial redistribution with respect to the frequencies in the Lorentz wings is described in the diffusion approximation. Asymptotic and approximation expressions are obtained for the probability of loss of a photon in flight; this probability takes into account the combined effect of local escape from the medium due to expansion and absorption in the continuum.
