The profile of the line H-alpha is investigated on the basis of a chromospheric and photospheric model of Arcturus (Alpha Boo, K2 III). It is shown that the central parts of the line are formed in the upper part of the chromosphere and in the transition region. From the width of the line H-alpha it is possible to determine the nonthermal velocity of the gas at the base of the transition region. The H-alpha profile depends weakly on the temperature and pressure in the chromosphere. From the appearance of an emission core in the theoretical H-alpha profiles it is possible to estimate an upper limit of the pressure at the base of the transition region.
