This paper discusses a new method for testing the theory of evolution of planetary nebula nuclei independent of the distance to the nebulae. From recent models of the evolution of planetary nebula nuclei a theoretical histogram of the ratio of the intensity of He II λ4686 to Hβ is calculated. The results are compared with the observations collected for 194 planetaries. Satisfactory agreement between the observational data and the theoretical prediction is attained only if a correlation between PN and NPN mass is introduced. The best-fitting parameter set suggests that less massive central stars have less massive nebulae and that the mass distribution of the nuclei it very narrowly peaked at 0.60 M_sun;.
