The secular motions of the node and the perihelion of Mercury are calculated from numerically integrated ephemerides, and compared to those already existing obtained from analytical studies and observational analysis. The differences in the analytical rates are found to be negligible compared to 0arcsec.2 per century, the estimated error of the present computation, which has been numerical. The classical method of determining the secular motions from the observations has been critically examined to find that, because of the geometry of the orbits, the geocentric angular data of low precision (±1arcsec) are incapable of giving the apse rate better than 3arcsec per century. Only very accurate range measurements (±1 km or less) over carefully selected portions of the orbit as well as over a long enough period, say one or two decades, can give the apse rate to an accuracy of about 0arcsec.1 per century.
