A diffuse patch of optical emission (a brightness of 23.25 + or - 0.5 mag to a limiting magnitude of 27.0) has been detected in the SW radio lobe of 3C 33. The brightest feature in this patch is coincident with the peak radio emission of the lobe at 5 GHz and with a scintillating radio source known to be contained in the lobe. An optical spectrum of this object shows emission lines from He II, H-beta, and (O III). These lines have a redshift which is 3300 + or - 600 km per sec less than that of the central optical galaxy associated with the source.
