Results are reported for coordinated near-IR (1.2 to 20 microns) and millimeter observations of the H II regions W40 (G28.8+3.5) and W48 (G35.2-1.7). The millimeter observations involved the J = 1-0 transitions of (C-12)O and (C-13)O in the vicinity of both sources. Intensity maps are presented which reveal three 2.2-micron emission peaks in W40, two close compact IR components in W48, a strong peak of CO emission in W40, and two CO emission peaks in W48. It is found that: (1) the measured velocities of hydrogen recombination lines differ from those of CO by about 4 km/s in both sources; (2) the difference is negative in W40 and positive in W48; (3) the velocities of carbon recombination lines fall close to those of CO for both regions; and (4) the IR sources are displaced from the peaks of CO emission. The results are shown to indicate that W40 and W48 lie at the edges of molecular clouds and also to support a hot blister model for the development of these H II regions from their associated molecular clouds.
