According to the basic theory of the explosive origin of the universe, deuterium was formed as a result of the combination of a neutron with a proton during an early phase of the universe. Given the temperature of the microwave background, the abundance of deuterium can be used to determine the present density of the universe. A plot of the relation between deuterium abundance and density employing the model of the 'standard big bang cosmology' developed by Wagoner (1973) is provided. The value of the primordial deuterium obtained leads to a present total density of matter in the universe of 4 times 10 to the minus 31st power g/cu cm, in good agreement with estimates based upon the kinematics of galaxies reported by Gott and Turner (1976).
