Scientific paper

Historical records of the return of Halley's comet are discussed with reference to the comet's orbital evolution. Times of return are indicated, based on a calculation of the comet's motion; perturbations caused by the planets during the last 3000 years are taken into account. An attempt is made to determine whether the historical records refer to Halley's comet or to some other phenomenon. The investigation has helped solve some problems concerned with chronology.
