A new theory for the origin of planetary atmospheres is proposed. The theory is based on a systematic analysis of the history of the protoplanetary cloud and on observational data concerning the earth's atmosphere. It is suggested that, for the terrestrial planets, thick primordial atmospheres originated from the protoplanetary cloud by accretion of planetesimals. These primordial atmospheres were composed of reducing gases. The duration of the primordial atmospheres and the implications of the reducing gas atmosphere for cosmogony and for theories of the origin of life are considered.
