The supernova shock is driven by neutrinos emitted by the core. When the neutrino emission declines, the shock no longer has pressure support, and the inner part of the shocked material falls back on the core. The main part of the shock, however, is moving rapidly (with a velocity of order 109 cm s-1) outward and has by this time (≥ 2 s) moved far from the center so that gravity is small. Hence it continues to move out and the shock is preserved.
