The possibility that the double quasar 0957+561 A, B is really a single quasar with its image split by a gravitational lens is examined. The properties of a gravitational lens are analytically defined, and it is shown that the light from a point mass passing through a lens will arrive at the observer from two separate trajectories. It is further demonstrated that in the case of an extended object, the constraints on the lens configuration are weak. The case of an extended galaxy being interposed between the quasar and the earth is considered in the light of IR and UV data, and evidence is found for the presence of an intermediary elliptical galaxy. Finally, the invariance of the flux ratio in moving from IR to optical to UV wavelengths is taken as conclusive evidence for the presence of a gravitational lens.
