A bidimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation is used in a first attempt to estimate the optimal separations of the Cluster Regatta spacecraft, for the study of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at the magnetopause. A small separation of the Cluster spacecraft (approximately 200 km) is concluded to be adaptable to resolve the current layer and to study the small scale turbulence which may provide the macroscopic equivalent. However, a remote spacecraft is necessary at a distance of 1 R sub E to unambiguously study the propagation of the waves and their nonlinear evolution.
