Present understanding of the causes of the diffuse interstellar bands
(DIBs) in stellar spectra is reviewed. The characteristics of DIBs are
described, and the possibility that dust particles or molecules cause
the DIBs is discussed. The occurrence of DIBs in special environments
such as that near SN1987A is addressed.
