Theoretical neutron star cooling rates are compared with upper limits on the surface temperature of the Crab Nebula and Vela pulsars. The cooling rates are also compared with the surface temperatures of the presumed neutron stars in the Tycho and Cas A supernova remnants, and the remnant of the 1006 supernova. The presumed neutron stars in the supernova remnants appear to be cooler than indicated by the calculations without pionization, although the temperature data do not contradict the calculations with pionization, which suggests that the supernova remnants in question do not contain neutron stars.
