The inverse scattering problem involving the reconstruction of the reflecting potential according to observed phases of acoustic-wave reflection is investigated in connection with the seismic probing of the outer regions of the sun. The potential perturbation of the standard model in the form of a combination of five B-splines leads to a constructive solution of the problem of the discrepancy between observed and calculated frequencies of the five-minute oscillations. The discrepancy is reduced by an order of magnitude. The corresponding change in the shape of the reflecting potential is interpreted as a general increase of convection efficiency in the standard solar model.
