Maps of the radio structure of the quasar 3C273 provide evidence of a superluminal expansion during the period 1977-1980. The superluminal expansion might be attributed to the movement of a single knot away from the nucleus along the jet. The apparent constant velocity of 10 times the speed of light is an important constraint on theories of apparent superluminal expansion. Further observations of 3C273 and other superluminal sources are needed to show whether the expansion is always at a constant velocity; the present results show that such analyses must be based on maps, rather than on the motion of features in the visibility function.
