Infrared photometry and optical spectrophotometry of the AM Herculis star 2A 0311-227, which is associated with the hard X-ray source of the same designation, are discussed. Light curves obtained in the J band are presented which indicate the presence of two eclipses at infrared wavelengths, in addition to an intermittent eclipse observed in H-alpha. The eclipses are interpreted in terms of a model of an AN Her system consisting of a late dwarf star which experiences Roche-lobe overflow through dipolar field lines onto a magnetic white dwarf, with the narrow eclipse in the infrared attributed to an eclipse by the M dwarf, the broad infrared eclipse to the white dwarf and the emission-line eclipse to the accreting gas stream. The eclipses are shown to impose severe constraints on system geometry, including an inclination of near 80 deg and an M dwarf mass corresponding to spectral type M7 or M8.
