Auroral photographs and auroral electron precipitation data from the DMSP 33 satellite are used to study the soft electron precipitations in the midday auroral oval. The simultaneous auroral display is examined to determine the relation between different types of electron precipitation in this region and the visual midday auroral forms. In particular, the location of the polar cusp type of precipitation is defined with respect to the instantaneous visual auroral display in the midday part of the auroral oval. It is proposed that the ionospheric projection of the polar cusp is a small region of the instantaneous dayside auroral oval near the noon meridian, coinciding with the gap of the midday discrete auroras.
