It is shown that the influx of He, Ne, and Ar-36 into the atmospheres of Mars and Mercury from 'external' (i.e., interplanetary) sources is significant and requires the existence of special mechanisms to explain the observed concentrations in the atmospheres. For the Mars atmosphere, the most probable mechanism for Ne and Ar-36 losses is dissipation arising in the interaction of the atmosphere with the solar wind during periods of anomalously low temperatures. For Mercury, thermal dissipation for He and the polar wind for other inert gases are considered to be the probable mechanisms. It is also shown that, for other earth-group planets, dissipation arising in the interaction with the solar wind and the influx of inert gases with interplanetary dust could have played an important role in the early stages of planetary evolution.
