An analysis is presented of the influence of the main ionization trough and its polar boundary on the transmission of radio signals; the study is based on oblique sounding data and the statistical characteristics of short-wave signals transmitted in the high-latitude ionosphere. Stable patterns are found for variations of signals reflected from the polar boundary of the trough. It is shown that combined measurements on several high-latitude paths can be used to determine the location and motion of the polar 'wall' of the trough.
