It is suggested that the origin of large heating fluxes in intense events on flare stars is associated with the annihilation of magnetic fields; the strength of these fields in the lower corona must be of the order of several hundred oersted. The observed X-ray-to-optical luminosity ratios are consistent with the present theoretical estimates and yield evidence that in soft X-ray flares, the outflowing hot gas is confined by the magnetic field near the surface of the star.
