The present study calculates the velocity field of gas clouds in the envelopes of nuclei of type I Seyfert galaxies and quasars. Gas outflow is assumed, with the clouds being decelerated as a consequence of intercloud gas drag. The concept of critical cloud dimension, determined by the condition that the cloud optical depth in the Lyman-alpha line must be 100-1000, is introduced and discussed. The possibility of the formation of absorption lines in quasar envelopes is considered.
